Book Description:
The winner of Alaska's world-famous Iditarod -- a grueling, eleven-hundred-mile dog sled race across a frigid Arctic wilderness---takes home a $250,000 purse.

But this year, the prize is survival.

Only the toughest and the most able come to compete in this annual torturous test of endurance, skill, and courage. Now, suddenly and inexplicably, the top Iditarod contestants are dying one by one in bizarre and gruesome ways. Jessie Arnold, Alaska's premier female "musher," fears she may be the next intended victim, but nothing is going to prevent her from aggressively pursuing the glory and the rewards that victory brings.

Dedicated State Trooper Alex Jensen is determined to track down the murderer before more innocent blood stains the pristine Alaskan snow. But Jensen's hunt is leading him into the frozen heart of the perilous wild that Jessie Arnold knows so well -- a merciless place far from any vestige of civilization, where nature can kill as fast as a bullet...and only the Arctic night can hear your final screams.

The author gives you a look at the Iditarod sled dog race from a musher's point of view... the scenery, the thrills, the torture of cold temperatures and grueling long days and nights of the race... and you get a great mystery, as well.

I had several other books on my "to be read" list when this book arrived in the mail. But I picked it up to look it over, started reading, and couldn't stop until it was finished! Wonderful descriptions of the Alaska wilderness, the grueling Iditarod Race, and the determination of the mushers who compete in the race. A nice mystery is thrown into the mix and you have a page-turner for sure.

The book was great!! This was the first one in the series. I can definitely see why this book won awards. It was very well written and you felt like you were right there. Good mystery and good main characters. I can't wait to read more!

What a good story.. Sue Henry did a fine job of mixing the action of a murder mystery with all the action from the Iditarod dog sled race. This cozy mystery is moving to the top of my list of cozy's. I'm going to find the next book and get to it a soon as I can.
Give it a shot you like it a lot..

I watched the Iditarod on TV every year. I was so glad to find this book. The thrills, hardships (man and dogs), Alaska, and life on the trail was so interesting. Of course, there are the murders. What a great story and characters. I would recommend this series. This was my first, already have the 2nd one and will get more to read.

I love this whole series, of which this is the first book! So interesting to learn about Alaska, mushing, and sled dogs, while solving a mystery with Jessie and Alex.

Jessie Arnold, Alaska's famous "musher" has won the world-famous Iditarod - a grueling, eleven hundred mile dog sled race across a frigid Arctic wilderness - and takes home a $250,000 prize. But Jessie discovers a new race - the race to stay alive as she and her famous sled dogs track a killer into the frozen heart of the perilous wild that only Jessie knows so well.
I found myself getting caught up in "living" in the snow and ice. Great book.

This is first in the series, and I can understand why Sue Henry won the Anthony & Macavity Awards for best first mystery.

The Iditarod is a well known dog sled race that tests endurance, skill, and courage. Now, suddenly and inexplicably, the top Iditarod contestants are dying one by one in bizarre and gruesome ways. Jessie Arnold, a female "musher," fears she may be the next intended victim, but nothing is going to prevent her from trying to win the race.

A well paced, well-writen book that brings out the thrill of the Iditarod. This is a classic book in my opinion if you like to read about Alaska or mysteries. There is so much detail, you feel as though you've run the race yourself.

Highly recommend.
