Prim, plain, desperately virtuous Lady Mary Fairchild stared at the seductive gentleman and wondered -- did he remember the elements of the night they met? Surely not. In the ten years since, she had abandoned her youthful impetuousness and transformed herself into a housekeeper -- disguising her beauty beneath a servant's dour clothing determined to conquer the passions of the past.
But Sebastian Durant, Viscount Whitfield, did recognize her as a Fairchild, one of his family's bitter enemies. When he demanded her help recovering a stolen diary, she dared not refuse him. When he proposed they masquerade as a betrothed couple, loyalty forced her to agree. And when the restraint between them shattered and pleasure became an obsession, Mary had to trust a powerful man who could send her to the gallows ... or love her through eternity.

This was a fairly pleasant read. The heroine was plucky and resourceful, the hero was gallant and intelligent and the sex was off the chizzy; excluding some irritating "no means yes" moments so prevalent in the romance genre. Miss. Dodd delivers an engaging romp with characters you come to care about even though they are a little annoying. Though, i must say i much prefer the scheming cousin Ian! What is it about a failed man that is so... yummy! Only on paper, of course. Enjoy!

An easy read. Was expecting more mystery and how they (Mary Fairchild and Sebastian Durant) met ten years ago. A little bit disappointed.

She thought after 10 years he would forget the night they might. He didn't. When he demands her help, she does not refuse, but will he be her true love or not? Another great historical romance by Ms. Dodd.

Set in 1793, one of Christina Dodd's first non-medieval stories. For an excellent review, see: http://www.likesbooks.com/cgi-bin/bookReview.pl?BookReviewId=4007

Although it is a fun and fast read, I would not consider it one of Ms. Dodd's best books. The plot seemed a bit too contrived (even for a traditional romance), and the subplot involving the murder is built up throughout the book, but the reolution seemed like an afterthought. All in all, a fun read. Don't let my review discourage you.
