This fact-based novel about a young woman who journeys from Boston to the wilds of Canada in the early 20th century still resonates with love and laughter and tears.

Mrs. Mike is based on the true story of the character's namesake, Katherine Mary who met the authors in Los Angeles in the 1940's. What a different type of a book and I loved it! It's the story of a girl from Boston suffering from pleurisy who goes to live with her uncle in middle-of-nowhere Canada to improve. While there, she finds love and embarks on a life very different from the bustling Boston refinement she came from. Don't be fooled, this is not a book for the squeamish or faint-hearted, ...more Mrs. Mike is based on the true story of the character's namesake, Katherine Mary who met the authors in Los Angeles in the 1940's. I love this book. It is however, very sad, and I can't reread it without starting to cry by the third chapter. This does not keep me from doing so. An excellent book about life in the arctic circle before WWI.
I read this book in fifth grade - the first "long" book that I'd ever read. I remember the story to this day...a great adventure about a courageous woman.
