Here this wonderful series begins. Did a doctor in the neighborhood die of poisoned mushrooms then rush to try to cure himself, but too late? Or is that the way he died at all. And of course as in any English village there is more speculation and gossip than you can shake a stick at. But Mrs. Jeffries and her "team" are more than a match to find out what really happened here, and to pass along tips and information to the Inspector. They bring to a new high the concept that you can make someone love your idea and make him think the idea was his all the time. Super cozy!

I enjoy the down to earth qualities of the characters. It's quick reading and for me a good writer is one that doen't have blood and gore and can keep me reading and not wanting to put the book down till I get to the end. The authors of the Mrs. Jeffries series aren't Agatha Christie- whose whole mystery collection I have- including Hound of Death-never published in the US. and I continue to re-read her, but I need new stimulation of the brain cells and this series does it for me.

I enjoyed this book, but I don't think I'll be reading any more in the series. It was just a little too lightweight for me. The premise of the book, that the housekeeper solves the mysteries and leads her employer in the right direction, just doesn't come off as believable enough. It bothered me and detracted from my enjoyment of the book, which was otherwise well-written.

Here's the book to introduce you to a good mystery series. Set in 18oos. Inspector Witherspoon is kind but not very capable. His crew of servants want to keep their happy home so they do all the sleuthing and make the Inspector think he's done it. Wonderful cast of characters that soon become old friends.
