Book Description:
A richly imagined novel of the Old West, as spare and vivid as a high plains sunset, from one of the world's most talented performers.

It was a long time ago, now, and there were many gunfights to follow, but I remember as well as I remember anything the first time I saw Virgil Cole shoot. Time slowed down for him. Always steady, and never fast . . .

When it comes to writing, Robert B. Parker knows no boundaries. From the iconic Spenser detective series and the novels featuring Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone, to the groundbreaking historical novel Double Play, Parker's imagination has taken readers from Boston to Brooklyn and back again. In Appaloosa, fans are taken on another trip, to the untamed territories of the West during the 1800s.

When Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch arrive in Appaloosa, they find a small, dusty town suffering at the hands of renegade rancher Randall Bragg, a man who has so little regard for the law that he has taken supplies, horses, and women for his own and left the city marshal and one of his deputies for dead. Cole and Hitch, itinerant lawmen, are used to cleaning up after opportunistic thieves, but in Bragg they find an unusually wily adversary-one who raises the stakes by playing not with the rules, but with emotions.

This is Robert B. Parker at his storytelling best.

Decidedly not a Spencer novel, this first book in a new series, however, shows Robert B. Parker's typical sparce writing style, his appealing characters, and wonderful story telling ability. You do not have to be a fan of westerns to enjoy the antics of the two very different main characters as they begin to bring a bit of law and order to a lawless small town.

Predictable but a good very easy read for a couple of days. I'll wait for the movie to come out on DVD.

This is not your typical Bang-Bang shoot 'em up Western! It has all the drama of a shoot-out at the OK Corral, yes; but more than the 'what' you also learn the 'why.' The novel is also a New York Times best seller.

Author Robert B. Parker also writes the extremely popular detective series featuring Spencer, with titles like COLD SERVICE, BAD BUSINESS, HUSH MONEY and WIDOW'S WALK.

From back cover: When Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch arrive in Appaloosa, they find a town suffering at the hands of a renegade rancher who's already left the city marshal and one of his deputies dead. Cole and Hitch are used to cleaning up after scavengers, but this one raises the stakes by playing not with the rules---but with emotion.

I saw the movie first and was compelled to read the bok after the fact. I was surprised at how closely the movie followed the booK--at time even quoting text exactly. It was an easy read that was well written with plenty of action involved.

A really good classic Western. Now a movie.

Again I've been reading everything Parker has written since he was a pup.

Very enjoyable. It was certainly different as it took place in the Old West but having read Robert Parker before, I took a gamble on it and it paid off.

Another surprising Western from Robert Parker. Spenser with a six gun, chaps and big hat. Wonderful

A GREAT read from the author who brought you the Spencer series - a Western that shows his skill runs the gauntlet!
The town is Appaloosa; the newcomers are Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch and they've come to clean the town up - if they don't get themselves killed!

"Pure old fashioned storytelling...the work of a master craftsman, Parker captures the West as neatly as he does the streets of Boston."--The Washington Post

"A classic western...with a twist."--Boston Herald
