"Polished and unsettling. . . . Horror emanates from the awfulness of life itself, its grim traps and finalities. Come Closer is a nasty piece of work, and short-ideal for an evening's reading, with a kick that stays with you for days afterward."-The Cleveland Plain Dealer"What begins as a sly fable about frustrated desire evolves ...  more »

I don't usually read books in the horror genre, but I picked this up after it was mentioned in the NY Times Book Review. This slim volume can be finished in one sitting, and makes for an entertaining couple of hours.

Amanda works for an architectural firm, and is contentedly (if not blissfully) married to her husband Edward. Her career and marriage unravel as she begins having dark thoughts and acting out hurtful behaviors that she becomes unable to control. Come Closer is unique because it is written in the first person, so it is not clear to the reader whether she is becoming mentally unstable or if she is truly possessed by a demon.

This book is not gory or make you sleep with the light on scary, but it is very creepy ad readable.

Disturbing novel about possession and/or insanity. It's written in the first person, with the demon stepping in from time to time. It could be read as a horror novel or as a novel about how it feels to become insane. I'm not sure what the author intended, but it seems to be possession as a metaphor for insanity. In any case, sparely written and convincing.

I read this book in an hour and a half...captivating...disturbing....reminded me of The yellow Wallpaper...a woman's descent into madness

Demonic possession or decent into madness - that is the question! Come closer is a mind boggling psychological thriller that kept me satisfied from beginning to end. While the book was a quick read, the story was both captivating and creepy. Amanda's once picture perfect marriage and life become uncontrollable chaos. From scratching in the walls to dreams of a demonic entity, Amanda must get control of her life and mind before it's too late.

This book is a simple, quick read. I enjoyed reading it, but did not enjoy the writer's writing style - very quick and choppy. The book left me wanting more.

This is a quick read about a woman who starts experiencing bizarre things, like sounds that come and go, blackouts, and dreams about a woman with black hair and pointed teeth. These things lead to a subtle change in her which cause her marriage and life to slowly come apart. Psycholigically creepy and made me wonder what I would have done in the same situation.

Great read. Finished it in 2 hours. Very creepy.

Amanda is happily married, likes her job, and enjoys her life. But if everything is so perfect, then why the sudden violent temper and obscene thoughts? Why the unsettling urge to harm the people she loves? What are those strange tapping sounds in teh walls? And just who is that woman following her? Certainely there must be a perfectly reasonable explanation for what's happenning to Amanda.

There is.......

D.U.M.B. The only thing good about it was it was short. I'm glad I only wasted a couple of hours on it. Not at all frightening (except in how bad it was).

Very disappointed in this book - there was no suspense or thought to be put into it, as the author plainly stated everything that was happening and why. It's a fast read, but in my opinion, not worth the time.

A good, fast read. I loaned it to my daughter and she enjoyed it as well. If you're into this genre, I think you'll enjoy it.
