Book Description:
In the year 2060, sophisticated investigative tools can help catch a killer. But there are some questions even the most advanced technologies cannot answer.

Ridley Pearson has praised J. D. Robb's suspense as "taut" and "nerve-jangling." Her latest thriller sets a new standard for suspense, as the priest at a Catholic funeral mass brings the chalice to his lips-and falls over dead.

When Detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas confirms that the consecrated wine contained potassium cyanide, she's determined to solve the murder of Father Miguel Flores, despite her discomfort with her surroundings. It's not the bodegas and pawnshops of East Harlem that bother her, though the neighborhood is a long way from the stone mansion she shares with her billionaire husband, Roarke. It's all that holiness flying around at St. Christobal's that makes her uneasy.

A search of the victim's sparsely furnished room reveals little- except for a carefully hidden religious medal with a mysterious inscription, and a couple of underlined Bible passages. The autopsy reveals more: faint scars of knife wounds, a removed tattoo-and evidence of plastic surgery, suggesting that "Father Flores" may not have been the man his parishioners had thought. Now, as Eve pieces together clues that hint at gang connections and a deeply personal act of revenge, she believes she's making progress on the case. Until a second murder-in front of an even larger crowd of worshippers--knocks the whole investigation sideways. And Eve is left to figure out who committed these unholy acts--and why.

This book threw me off a bit... Eve wasn't the same Eve; that said, I think she has matured: she didn't throw herself into a case and allow herself to suffer at the hands of the case. Another "twist" in this book, is that there wasn't any real flashback to her past or Roarke's past. It was kind of refreshing. As much as I love each and every single book in this series (and won't trade them...sorry... love them too much), this one just felt different. It was a mature kind of different; it wasn't the template that some of the ones before had felt like they had been molded into. I kinda missed the old, bossy, take no crap, Eve but I guess we all have to grow up eventually. I mean, she was actually NICE to Peabody and almost nice to Summerset! :)

The thing I DIDN'T like was the lack of our old friends; many of the characters took a back seat, if they were in the book at all. In all fairness, each was "there" but it really lacked the different interactions that we are all so used to and Charles/Louise were only mentioned, not even seen. Lastly, the romantic scenes were NOT up to par of Roarke and Eve. It was a little disappointing when I was looking to catch up with her hottie husband! :)

All in all, it just felt flat. If you are a faithful fan, you will still love the book. If you haven't read any in this series, don't start here. Go back to the beginning: Naked In Death...

Eve is back and sassy as ever. I love how she seems more comfortable with the love she and Roarke share for each other. They treat it like the special thing it is. The excerpt from Promises in Death is heart-wrenching all by itself... can't wait to read that one!
