Book Description:
Left on her own when her family dies in a terrible disaster, fifteen-year-old Green is haunted by loss and by the past. Struggling to survive physically and emotionally in a place where nothing seems to grow and ashes are everywhere, Green retreats into the ruined realm of her garden. But in destroying her feelings, she also begins to destroy herself, erasing the girl she'd once been as she inks darkness into her skin. What a strange little book! The prose was beautiful, as were the pictures. I was immediately drawn into the story, but I was left utterly confused at the end. What happened to everyone? There were clues that a terrible tragedy had occurred, a fire? I'm not quite sure what happened! This was my first Alice Hoffman read, but it definitely won't be my last.

A short story. Hoffman tends to be a little weird but this one is even stranger than usual.

A very short but engrossing story about a girl who loses her family and then herself.
wonderful! quick read, but as magical and touching as anything written by alice hoffman.
Excellent writing, filled with emotions you can actually feel.
