Charlie rushed out to see what was happening. Six ravens flew high above the road, "kekking" and warning the neighborhood about Mr. Spinder. They did not stop their harassment until he had ridden his horse all the way through his gate and disappeared inside his house. When the ravens could no longer see him, they broke ranks and flew in pairs back to their respective territories. Charlie ran to Granddad.
"I know Mr. Spinder doesn't like ravens," he said. "But the ravens don't like him either."
Granddad's eyes shone brightly. "Something's going on here," he said. "Birds are able to recognize individual people. These ravens know Mr. Spinder all right. I'll wager he's been out with his gun. Ravens know all about guns."
