Book Description:
With over five million copies of her novels in print, New York Times bestselling author Virginia Henley has enchanted readers worldwide. Now she sweeps us back to an intensely romantic, tumultuous time in Scottish history. . . . When Lynx de Warenne, Edward Plantagenet's most prized warrior, invaded Dumfries castle, he took possession of Jane Leslie's home--and soon wanted something more from the headstrong lass. Desperate for an heir, he proposed a handfasting: a Scottish custom whereby a man can lawfully take a woman into his bed, then, after a year and a day, the couple can either wed or part. Any child of that union is deemed legitimate. Jane had no choice but to surrender to the invader's knowing touch. . . . Fearless on the battlefield, Lynx was afraid to love. But Jane slowly stole into his heart. And as the fires of war raged around them, amid treacherous foes and brilliant intrigues, who would have thought that two such unlikely partners would fall in love--or that their breathless passion for each other would outlast . . . Virginia Henley is the author of fourteen romantic novels, including the New York Times bestsellers Seduced and Desired. Her work has been translated into ten languages. A recipient of the Romantic Times Lifetime Achievement Award, she lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Ontario, Canada.

This book was enjoyable, but kind of felt empty towards the end. The characters that had been pretty well developed early suddenly made odd choices right near the end - and then the book was done. And the fiery sparks that flew between the main characters for most of the book suddenly vanished and everything got mushy. Now, I enjoy mushy, but it felt weird in this case. Still a good read, and I may read others by this author if I run across them, but I won't seek them out.

Scottish romance set in the Highlands during the time of Robert the Bruce. Typical plot line with handfasted marriage, jealous ex-mistress and impending war all threatening to separate two lovers.

Really hated this book. It should come with a big warning: there is an extremely unhappy, unsatisfying ending to a romantic subplot.

Not your typical romance book, and I really liked it.

This book is different in that the "heroine" isn't rich. She's the daughter of the castle "steward" or manager. The new "owner" sees her as "fertile" and could possibly provide him with an heir!!

He offers her a handfast marriage (the year & a day) and will marry her if she gets pregnant in the year.

Good Read & a different take on a medieval romance.

in the beginning the guy sees the girl as nothing but a brood mare, he really wants a kid. they have lots of trouble including a mistress who wants him back and a whole bloody war in which he thinks her brothers are traitors.

"handsome & widowed, he feared only love...."
"beautiful & headstrong, she feared only him.."
