First he'll learn her most intimate secrets. Then he'll arouse her deepest passions. Hes the lover she's been waiting for: the man who can rescue her from her wicked past -- for a price -- in Madeline Hunter's tale of sin, seduction, and irresistible, impossible love.
He catches her eye across the dining room -- a handsome stranger who stands out among the lewd noblemen and bawdy painted women. But their worlds are about to collide in a way Roselyn Longworth could never have imagined. For before the night is out, she will be auctioned off to the highest bidder...and Kyle Bradwell will lead her from one kind of hell to another. Yet from the moment he wins her, Kyle treats Rose with a gentleness she hasnt known since a family scandal destroyed her reputation. And when she finally learns what is really driving Kyle, it's too late. For Rose has fallen for the man who knows her most intimate secrets. Now he has stunned her with a proposal of marriage -- the first step in a seduction that will demand nothing less than her complete surrender...
This is the third in a series and its events are closely tied to the first book, _The Rules of Seduction_, though Hunter cleverly conceals a major spoiler for anyone reading this book first. In this historical romance, Roselyn Longworth continues to suffer the societal repercussions of her brother's embezzlement, made far worse when she becomes involved with a very devious and cruel nobleman. She is rescued by Kyle Bradwell, a man who is socially much inferior to her, and they begin a relationship which is complicated by numerous issues, from his lower-class background to her brother's crime. As always, Hunter writes an intelligent and multi-layered story, with very passionate love scenes. I wasn't as touched by this story as I was by _The Rules of Seduction_, one of my very favorite romances, but it is still very good.

Charming tale of betrayal, scandal, redemption, acceptance, & love. Ms.
Hunter is a master storyteller of this genre, & she does not disappoint.

I have loved all three of this series, but this is by far my favorite. The story is complex and the characters wonderfully written. The sensual love story is so well done and the emotions of the hero and heroine as complex as any romance novel I've read. It was interesting to read in context about the class issues and the legal, banking laws of the times in this novel. Madeline Hunter writes so that the story never gets bogged down, but draws very clear pictures of the society of the time. There is a fouth in the series due out Jan '09. I for one, can't wait.

Although I was really excited to read this book (moved it to the top of my TBR pile) I was horribly dissapointed. The plot seemed to drag and the entire drama of the heroine's brother's crimes seemed contrived and pointless. Worst of all was the seeming lack of chemistry between the main characters. Although I appreciated the honest portrayl of class division in 19th century England it did not help the plot one bit. The heroine's previous of affair with the novel's villian only seems to portray her complete idiocy and does nothing to endear her to the reader.
I haven't read any other novels of Madeline Hunter so I am not sure if the distant characters are her "style" or if this book is just a poor example of her work.
