The Book of Three is the first of Lloyd Alexander's five-part novel series The Chronicles of Prydain (first published 1964). It follows the adventures of Taran, a boy in the care of the enchanter Dallben, as he enters manhood while fighting the forces of the evil Arawn Death-Lord... In the land of Prydain, evil is never far away. Arawn, Lord of the Land of Death, has been building an army of dark warriors to take over Prydain, and the only way to stop him is to destroy the Black Cauldron he uses to create his dreaded soldiers. Taran, Assistant Pig-Keeper, dreams of adventure, but nothing exciting ever happens to an Assistant Pig-Keeper--until his pig runs away. A chase through the woods leads Taran far from home and into great danger, for evil prowls the land of Prydain. With a collection of strange and wonderful friends whom he meets on his journey, Taran finds himself fighting so that good may triumph over evil -- and so that his beloved home will not fall to a diabolical fiend. Taran and his loyal companions must journey deep into Arawn's domain to destroy the Black Cauldron. For each of them, the quest has special meaning. For Taran, it is a glorious opportunity to use his first sword in battle. But war requires a sacrifice greater than he'd ever imagined... Since The Book of Three was first published in 1964, young readers have been enthralled by the adventures of Taran the Assistant Pig-keeper and his quest to become a hero. Taran is joined by an engaging cast of characters that includes Eilonwy, the strong-willed and sharp-tongued princess; Fflewddur Fflam, the hyperbole-prone bard; the ever-faithful Gurgi; and the curmudgeonly Doli--all of whom become involved in an epic struggle between good and evil that shapes the fate of the legendary land of Prydain. Lloyd Alexander's beautifully written tales not only captured children's imaginations but also garnered the highest critical praise. The Black Cauldron was a Newbery Honor Book, and the final volume in the chronicles, The High King, crowned the series by winning the Newbery Medal for "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. "Henry Holt is proud to present this classic series to a new generation of young readers. In their more than thirty years in print, the Chronicles of Prydain have become the standard of excellence in fantasy literature for children.
A book for young and old alike. It is not so indepth that a young reader cannot get into it, nor so simple that an experienced reader will not enjoy it. The Chronicles of Prydain is a great series, I enjoyed them all.
if you like the JRR Tolkien books you will like these. Easier to read for younger readers not as heavy into the language or the morals. Started me on a love of fantasy that continues to this day.
Excellent series for young readers. It was my all time favorite as a child. It is along the lines of a Lord of the Rings fantasy, using lots of Welsh legend.
These group of books are a great story for tween and teen with some character building inside the story. It's fantasy with a boy given a job of pig tender when he would like to do something grand.
