I have read all of Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone series. I love the all.

This is the fifth novel in the Sharon McCone series. Muller deals with the problems of Vietnam veterans. She also looks at the issue of the independent woman who has to find a way to balance working irregular hours with romance. McCone is not as flawed, and hence not as interesting a character as Paretskys V.I. Warshawski, but she has common sense and she is shrewd. I do not think these novels have dated much since the 1980s either. The local color is not too obtrusive, so even readers ignorant of San Francisco will not feel left out. Like Ruth Rendall, Muller often uses the theme of how the past haunts present.

This book is part of a series I have recently discovered. I enjoy it so much that I am reading all of them as I can get them. They feature Sharon McCone as an investigator. Sue Grafton said, "Marcia Muller is the founding 'mother' of the contemporary female hard-boiled private eye."

Great plane ride book. It is fast, a page turner and in the end a satisfying conclusion. Marcia Muller weaves a good mystery and it is all plausible. Sharon McCone is someone you would like to know and sit down and talk to.

Sharon McCone takes on a case for Willie Whelan, a "vendor" at the lcoal flea market..not to mention his moonlighting job as a fence! She's checking on a silent little man in dark clothes who's been hanging around watching Willie.....
