"how to take charge of your chid's schooling -- and why you absolutely must" -- the Colfaxes provide accessible, meaty advice on how to homeschool your child(ren). Published in 1988, this volume is still one of the classics on how to home school.
This was the first homeschooling book I read - and I would recommend it in conjunction with their other book. It was by far one of my favorites because it really shows what homeschooling can be. This book was written before homeschooling was popular, so these parents were pioneers.
I will add that your kid does not need to go to Harvard for homeschooling to be successful - for as long as they can follow their passions, they will succeed.

Fascinating account of a homeschooling family who sent many kids to Harvard.
How to Take Charge of your child's education and why you absolutely must.
The Colfaxes didn't start teaching their boys at home to get them into Harvard--but that's what homeschooling accomplished!
Excellent resource for homeschooling families or those who are thinking about homeschooling. LOADS of information!
Great book. Authors tell about there homeschooling experience, and give tips.
For over 15 years, David and Micki Colfax have been educating their children at home. They don't think of themselves as pioneers, though that's what they have become. Unhappy with the public schools, the Colfaxes wanted the best education possible for their 4 sons: a program for learning that met the evolving needs of each child and gave them complete control of how and what their children learned. The results? A prescription for excellence - Harvard educations for their sons.
Now the Colfaxes tell how all parents can become involved in homeschooling. In a straight-talking book that reads like a frank converstaion among friends, they tell what the did and how they did it: their educational approaches, the lessons they larned, and what materials - books, equipment, educational aids - proved most useful over the years. Best of all, they show you have you can take carge of your children's education - 9n an invaluable sourcebook that will help you find a rewarding and successful alternative to our failing schools.
