Book Description:
Doro is an entity who changes bodies like clothes, killing his hosts by reflex -- or design. He fears no one -- until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu has also died many times. She can absorb bullets and make medicine with a kiss, give birth to tribes, nurture and heal, and savage anyone who threatens those she loves. She fears no one -- until she meets Doro. From African jungles to the colonies of America, Doro and Anyanwu weave together a pattern of destiny that not even immortals can imagine.

This is an unusual story. I think that Octavia Butler has an amazing imagination! This is the story of two immortal beings: Doro and Anyanwu. They are locked into a struggle for power - Doro takes over by killing; Anyanwu uses her power to create and nurture. Interesting concept!

Octavia Butler is one of the best women science fiction writers today. Although not as good as as her trilogy, this is still an excellent read. Highly original, with main characters who are immortal and possess superhuman powers, excellent character development. A novel of character rather than action.
