Derek Strange is an ex-cop who now runs his own private detective agency. The mother of a young police officer killed by another cop hires him to clear up the lingering doubts surrounding her son's death. Although Terry Quinn, the other cop, has been cleared in the official investigation, his guilt torments him. After Strange interviews him, Quinn joins the investigation, even though in part he is investigating himself and whether his own prejudices led him to pull the trigger.
Strange and Quinn seek their answers in the darkest sectors of Washington, D.C., where racism and ruthless capitalism create a lawless world. This is a brilliant and savage thriller by the writer the Washington Post has called a fresh, new, utterly hard-boiled voice

In "Right As Rain" George Pelecanos introduces a memorable new pair of characters (Derek Strange and Terry Quinn, ex cops turned private detectives) into the grittily real Washington DC landscape which has led to him being acclaimed as 'A great writer' who 'deserves to be listed among the best'.

Whenever you come upon a new author it takes a bit of time to get into his rhythm of writing. This is definitely a new author for me and the story-line is exceptional, the characters compelling and the plot tight. I'll be looking for more from Pelecanos.

I really enjoyed this hardboiled crime novel which takes place in the Washington D.C. area. It's a little graphic and gritty in places, but a very good read.

First time I've read this author. Excellent mystery. I enjoyed the characters and the realistic descriptions of the environments that exist in many parts of the country today.

With Washington D.C. as his backdrop, Pelecanos explores a violent landscape of drugs and danger, loyalty and love.

This book begins a series involving P.I. Derek Strange and a maybe wannabe P.I., Terry Quinn. Set in Washington D.C., the scene setting is detailed, the dialogue exact and the story right on in a gritty, tell-it-like-it-is manner.

Using DC as the background, the author explores a dangerous landscape of drugs and danger, loyalty and love. Two former cops, Derek Strange, black and Terry Quinn, white, are pursuing the investigation of a police shooting. But in a city that lives within the shadows of a nation's dreams, neither Strange or Quinn can forsee the dirty little war that will break out around them. No one writes urban crime novels as well as Pelecanos.
