Book Description:
Somebody wants Mick Stranahan dead. Mick is sure of this, because he just had to dispatch a pistol-packing intruder with the help of a stuffed marlin head. But who would want to hurt a former Florida state investigator? The answer is plenty of people -- as Stranahan soon finds himself acquainted with a litter of nefarious players, including a hit man whose skin problems could fill a comprehensive (if bizarre) medical textbook, a lawyer of questionable repute who advertises on billboards, and a TV show host whose taste for sensationalism is exceeded only by his vanity. The whole thing gets downright harrowing for the ex-cop in one of Hiaasen's most breathtaking, madcap romps ever -- where even a plastic surgeon with extremely shaky hands waits to wring Stranahan's neck.

Another super Hiaasen novel full of wacky characters that inhabit South Florida. This is about the 5th Hiaasen I have read and I would have to say its one of the best. (Others I have read include Tourist Season, Double Whammy, Strip Tease, Lucky You). Hiaasen has a knack for coming up with characters that are so memorable. Chemo and his Weed whacker prosthesis, the incompetent Dr. Graveline, and Reynaldo Flemm: the Geraldo like journalist in seach of a scoop are unforgettable. Even though this novel goes over the top in the grisly department, I would highly recommend it.

I've enjoyed quite a few of Carl Hiaasen's books now, and this one did not disappoint me. Though not as humorous as some of his others this one delivers a solid plot line, memorable characters and, of course, Florida weirdness.

I'd rank it an 8 on a scale of 10 amongst his other books.

Very funny, laugh-out-loud read. Mick Stranahan tussles with assorted low-lifes out for his hide.

Not the best one I've read. Mostly predictable and there were no surprises. The main character in this book was just a little bit TOO crazy for my tastes.

Weird, funny, well written and fast paced.

A good Carl Hiaasen read. Some unusual characters for color and the flavor of Florida.

Skin tight is my favorite Carl Hiaasen book, and I've read them all.

The story is based on a true story, like all of Hiaasen's work. About a corrupted plastic surgeon, there is the right amount of crime, romance, and humor to keep you entertained throughout.

It is always fun to read a Carl Hiaasen book... characters you love to hate; clever but not silly; hilarious escapades and insightful excursions to Florida's seamier side.

Carl Hiaasen writes some of the funniest mysteries I've ever read. I have to concur with the reviewer who noted that he should really be thought of as a satirist. It would not be unusual to find yourelf laughing out loud as you read any of his books. They all take place in Florida, and he must have a monopoly on the greatest number of weirdos to ever populate one work. How he manages to do this continually is amazing. Try one and, promise, you'll be hooked!

From Publishers Weekly
Hiaasen's latest thriller is his funniest and sharpest novel to date. Set in a south Florida swarming with ripoff artists, crooked cops, nude sunbathers and corrupt politicians, it features a Mafia-connected plastic surgeon with butterfingers, a bitchy Hollywood starlet, a remarkably inept hit man and a pompous TV journalist "nationally famous for getting beaten up on camera." Retired state investigator Mick Stranahan, the hero, kills an intruder in his seaside house on stilts by impaling him with a trophy spearfish. Then one of his five ex-wives is found drowned. Due to an unresolved missing-person case, someone wants Stranahan eliminated, and his efforts to flush out the mixed bag of bad guys let Hiaasen ( Tourist Season ; Double Wham my ) display his manic sense of humor at every turn. The cynical sleuth has just the right mix of sour and smarts to get a fix on a mad world. This wickedly amusing story is the work of a keen satirist who off-handedly exposes the moral rot at every level of society. 50,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild, Mystery Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.
