Book Description:

This futuristic science fiction novel begins in the year 2019. Astronaut Nigel Walmsley is sent on a mission to intercept Icarus, a once-harmless meandering asteroid that has mysteriously converted into a comet headed on a direct collision course with Earth. When ordered to plant a device to destroy Icarus, Nigel lands on the comet and makes the startling discovery that it is in fact an ancient defunct space probe. Refusing to destroy this first evidence of alien presence in the universe, Nigel tries to explore the probe, unknowingly triggering something in the wreck which sends a mysterious signal into space.

Fast-forward to the year 2034. Nigel is now passing time in an obscure job thanks to his controversial decision, and his personal life has just taken a turn for worse with his wife diagnosed as terminally ill. It's at this time that a spaceship searching for organic lifeforms comes into our solar system in response to the last signal Icarus sent. The knowledge of this ship and it's incredibly sophisticated and sentient computers sends Earth leadership into turmoil. Once again, Nigel is called upon to go into space and deal with this new threat. Torn emotionally and morally, will Nigel do what's right, especially since what he learns could have tremendous repercussions for eons to come?

The first half of the book was very interesting and seemed to have a good storyline going for it. However, the latter half of the story drifted quite a bit and to the point it was almost like reading a completely different book. I liked the first half - the second half left me scratching my head. I'm going to give the sequel a try because I think the story has a lot of potential if the beginning of the story is continued.

I really enjoyed this book, read it in two nights.

I haven't read this, but my husband did. He enjoyed the series very much. I have all 6 books if you want the whole series at once.

I had high hopes for Gregory Benford's In the Ocean of Night. I had enjoyed Artifact quite a bit and was hoping for more of the same. The overall problem with the book is that it starts well and then declines, slowly but surely, until the end. By the time Bigfoot shows up, things are really pretty bad. (I kid you not about Bigfoot.)

Books about the unknown are supposed to get more interesting, fascinating, and wondrous the further you get into them, not less.

This is the first book of a long saga, a saga I won't be following.
