"As cunningly woven as a spider's web." PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Drew Maclane was a star agent--until the day the killing had to stop. He withdrew and for six years lived the life of a hermit in a monastery. But someone has tracked him down, leaving a trail of corpses. Someone who knows all about him, who knows how to draw him back into that electrifying world where no one is as he seems, and where life's most horrifying and harrowing game is played....

The main character, Drew, only wanted to be left alone to do penance for his sins when he withdrew from the world and went to live in an isolated monastery. When they came for him, six years later, he hadn't forgotten all he had learned in his training to be an assassin.
Our hero for this second book of the series (first is Brotherhood of the Rose, and third is League of Night and Fog) is Drew Maclane, once assassin, now hiding from the world in seclusion. He is drawn out and must use his past professional skills to keep alive and find out who is after him.
Very exciting, non stop action. Not a techno-heavy thriller, as our hero must use his own wits and killing skills to negotiate each obstacle.

Scalpel. A clandestine, government-sanctioned operation named for its purpose: precise surgical removal. Assassination.

Probably Morrell's best book. It has the best pace, best characters, and some of the best action in his ouvre. Highly recommended to fans of spy thrillers.
