Book Description:
"Anyone who finds it is finding a jewel. Its themes are profound and universal."
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
It is the now-classic story of two fathers and two sons and the pressures on all of them to pursue the religion they share in the way that is best suited to each. And as the boys grow into young men, they discover in the other a lost spiritual brother, and a link to an unexplored world that neither had ever considered before. In effect, they exchange places, and find the peace that neither will ever retreat from again....

This was a wonderful book about two Jewish boys during the time of WW II. It shows the struggles of a young man trying to come to terms with his own goals and desires and the expectations of his family, while emphasizing the value of friendship and the ability to overcome differences in beliefs.

Excellent book. At points a emotional rollercoaster -- cried, angry at the father's way, etc. Opened a door to a world I am not familar with. Some of the dialog lost me, not knowing Yiddish or Hebrew. Most of the time it was explained but not always. Definitely worth the time to read.

An amazing, absorbing book. The characterization is flawless and the story is fascinating.

I just re-read this book and loved it again. I first read it in 1968 - Yikes! Anyway it is still a really interesting peek into a life style that many of us know little about. And if you think its dated just drive through the Mintwood section of Brooklyn!

A story of fathers and sons. This book was selected for One Book Arizona. If I didn't already have a hard back copy, I wouldn't give this one up. It's truly a book to be kept and loved and read again.

This book starts a little slow and has a few slow spots throughout. But the ending and the message is so worth the read!

I've heard this book is good, and I enjoyed the first chapter, but I decided to move on to other books.
