Book Description:
"The terror, which would not end for another twenty-eight years--if it ever did end--began, so far as I can tell, with a boat made from a sheet of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain."

This is the first line of "It," the beginning of one of Stephen King's masterpieces.

In the summer of 1958, seven friends encountered something horrible in their town of Derry, Maine. This something fed on children, hunting them, preying on them, and devouring them. It could shape itself in any way It liked, whatever their nightmares suited, but always with one trademark: the semblance of a clown. The seven friends all had something in common: They had all escaped It at some point. And in that summer, they learned about It, confronted It, and killed It... or so they thought.

28 years later... A boy named Adrian Mellon is apparently thrown off a bridge by two other boys for his sexuality. It seems like an open-and-shut case, but the boys claim that there was something down below... a clown and a cloud of balloons.

Soon the friends are being called back to Derry, told that It is back. They made a vow, sealed in blood, to return if It wasn't dead.

"It" is two stories being told at once. One is the story of their childhood, of their first encounter with Pennywise the Clown, their troubles with the local bullies, the impact of It upon their lives, their own personal struggles, and the eventual defeat of It. At the same time, it is the story of the return to Derry, of the research they did to see what It was and subsequent events that followed.

I needed therapy after reading this book in the 7th grade, I slept with the lights on for 3 weeks. I am not entirely sure there is a book that has shaken me more. Great read!

Hope you're not scared of clowns. This book will have you hiding under the covers and leaving the light on!

Stephen King's absolute BEST. Very long, but so good and worth it.

Not King's best, but still very good. Something is killing children. It comes back every generation, and the ones that survived the last time will try to end it now.

This was the first Stephen King novel I ever read. It is huge- over 1000 pages if I remember right. I loved every minute of it and have been a fan of King's ever since.

Good, but the book was longer then the story needed to be imagined.

They were just kids when they stumbled upon the hidden horror of their hometown. Now, as adults, none of them can withstand the force that has drawn them all back to Derry, Maine, to face the nightmare without end, and the evil without a name.

A terrifically complex and well-woven story that's more about childhood and memory than it is about scary monsters. Truly touching, heartfelt, and devastating.

I read this book years ago when it first came out and I have to say it gave me the creeps. I would not read it at night, which I did. Scared myself to death. As a writer though, Stephen King is a great story teller. Where he comes up with this stuff I can only imagine.

**SPOILER ALERT**

It was well-written, thoroughly creepy, and very enjoyable.

Until the pre-adolescent orgy, which made me feel like a pedophile for reading.

I read the entire Dark Tower series - loved it. Thought I'd love all his other works. Picked up the most notable - this - and was horrified. And not in the way I'd hoped to be.

I'm never reading another Stephen King again.

They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they were grown-up men and women who had gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But none of them could withstand the force that drew them back to Derry, Maine to face the nightmare without an end, and the evil without a name. What was it? Read It and find out...if you dare!

The cover is different on this book. It has the clown on the front and it's black and red in the background.

Excellent book!! I have read it several times. Just want to note that my copy is a little older than the one pictured here....the cover is different, it has a picture of the scary clown face on the front.
