could not get into this tale.
Excellent! If you enjoy English mysteries, you will love this one.
Two pubs in Long Piddleton are the sights of two murders. Scotland Yard's Richard Jury gets some help from Long Piddleton's own Melrose Plant to root out evil in the heart of the village.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jury arrives in Long Piddleton and finds everyone in the postcard village looking outside for the killer of two dead men found at different pubs.
At the pub, The Man with a Load of Mischief, a dead man was found with his head stuck in a beer keg. At the Jack and Hammer, another body was stuck out on the beam of the pub's sign. Two pubs, two murders and Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jury is called in to help.
1st in the series of Richard Jury books. A good start.

The first of the series 'starring' the Scotland Yard detective Richard Jury ('the pub series'). They get better than this later on, but this one intros the cast of zany characters that are unforgettable. Modern English murder mystery.

At the Man with a Load of Mischief, they found a dead man with his head stuck in a beer keg. At the Jack and Hammer, another body was stuck out on the beam of the pub's sign, replacing the mechanical man who kept the time. Two pubs. Two murders. One Scotland Yard inspector called in to help. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jurry arrives in Long Piddleton and finds everyone in the postcard village looking outside of town for the killer. Except for Melrose Plant. A keen observer of human nature, he points Jury in the right direction: toward the darkest parts of his neighbors' hearts.
