This has been one of my favorite series featuring April Woo.
From back of book:
For NYPD detective April Woo, the retirement party for her former boss and mentor, Lieutenant Bernardino, is bittersweet. As they commemorate Bernardino's thiry-eight years on the job, cops and friends wish him well with bad jokes and good memories. Then they send him out into the night -- and into the hands of a cold-blooded killer....
....When April follows her friend with his forgotten retirement gifts, she finds his lifeless body. But the nightmare has just begun. Even as she mourns his death, she must track Bernadino's killer and investigate her own tightly knit family of police officers for a motive -- and a suspect. When a second victim is struck down, the hunt turns deadly in a tense and terrifying search for the truth.

I am now a fan of April Woo! I had read The Silent Birde & thought it was good, but after this one I am now hooked. I love the way Leslie Glass is able to present the characters & their life woven in with the "who done it" plot without it taking away from the story line.
