Book Description:

The Wardens Association has been around pretty much forever. Some Wardens control fire, others control earth, water, or wind - and the most powerful can control more than one element. Without Wardens, Mother Nature would wipe humanity off the face of the earth...

Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden. Usually, all it takes is a wave of her hand to tame the most violent weather. But now, Joanne is trying to outrun another kind of storm: accusations of corruption and murder. So, she's resorting to the very human tactic of running for her life...

Her only hope is Lewis, the most powerful Warden. Unfortunately, he's also on the run from the World Council. It seems he's stolen not one but three bottles of Djinn--making him the most wanted man on earth. And without Lewis, Joanne's chances of surviving are as good as a snowball in--well, a place she may be headed. So she and her classic Mustang are racing hard to find him because there's some bad weather closing in fast...

I've heard a lot of great things about this series. Although I don't think it's one of the best books that I've read, I definitely enjoyed it and it kept me at the edge of my seat - I even stayed up way past midnight to finish it. Since it was a series, I expected Joanne to be just fine in the end - so I certainly didn't expect the actual ending. Wow! Love the unexpected.

Great beginning to a wonderful series (this is 1st in the series) in the urban fantasy genre. For those who like LKH, Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong and the like. This was a very enjoyable read and I am hooked on the series.

I was glad I finally found time to read the first book of this series. The concept of wardens who control the four elements—earth, air (wind), fire, water (rain)—and thus impact everything from the weather to tree and plant growth was an interesting concept. And the addition of the Djinn, sort of like a genie, adds an additional element of magic to the story.

Though the story is primarily action-based and fantasy, there's a bit of romance in the side story going on too, though it's definitely secondary to the main story, which I appreciate since I can only take my romance with a "bite" or a "murder" or some other danger. :) I thought it started off slow, but the action quickly picked up and drew me in. I'm now looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

Wow! What a great book! This was an awful lot of fun! A smart, gutsy, likeable heroine with some very cool powers on the run from some really scary bad guys -- this book really kept me on the edge of my seat. Lots of action and adventure, thrown in with some romance and a fascinating take on the concept of the djinn. I couldn't read it fast enough! The perfect beach book for summertime reading.

got halfway through this book and never finished it due to lack of interest. It just kept segueing into a cheezy romance novel.

Very different to a lot of the fantasy genre out there now. Set in our modern world rather than a fantasy realm. It is a fast read with strong characters. I enjoyed the book very much.

First book in the series about Joanne Baldwin, a weather warden on the run across country, trying to avoid corruption and murder while at the same trying, trying to avoid falling in love with the mysterious man she meets along the side of the road.

The first sentence:
Well, thank God this is about to be over, I thought as I drove - well, blew - past the sign that marked the Westchester, Connecticut, city limits.

Quoted from my review @ http://misscz.wordpress.com

Joanne is a lot more powerful than she believes herself to be. She's good at what she does and just does it. She accepts an offer from one of her bosses to help him with a special project of his. Unfortunately, it's not what she was expecting and now she's on the run, accused of murder and infected with a demon. Lewis - or any Djinn - is Joanne's only chance of survival: The demon cannot overpower a Djinn. Joanne believes that all Lewis would have to do is order one of his Djinn to remove the demon, and one of her problems would be solved.

If it were only that simple.

The underlining theme of the book is the choices people, and Djinn (free ones anyway), make and the consequences of those choices. When she realize that foisting a demon on a Djinn is just as wrong as infesting another human, Joanne refuses to take the easy way out. To Wardens, Djinn are tools. When bound together, Djinn and Warden powers are enhanced and they can control the most powerful storms, earthquakes, and fires. But bound Djinn have no choice when ordered to do something they find ethically wrong. It takes an encounter with an unbound Djinn for Joanne to realize that they are living creatures with feelings and concepts of right and wrong.

This book is almost non-stop action, as Joanne tries to out-run storms and the Wardens. Since I read the blurb for Heat Stroke before I finished the book, I knew how this book would end. But that didn't distract me from the story. I really loved the concepts of the Wardens and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
