A starteling novel that notes the surreal events of a future where the government not only controls life, but watches your every move. (Think the patriot act on some serius steroids) This book will make you wonder about what the media is and is not telling us.

One of my favorite dystopian books-however, I wouldn't considering "light reading" a la a crime novel or romance novel. Definitely thought provoking.

Was Orwell a prophet, or what? If you've never read this modern classic of "negative utopia", you may well be shocked to find how profoundly it resonnates with the political climate of today. A must-read (or re-read!) cautionary tale.

In my opinion, this is George Orwell's best book. "1984" is a scarily accurate dystopic novel about what the author saw going on around him during the rise of such dictatorships as Stalin and Hitler. The novel asks what the world would be like if such totalitarian socialism were allowed to run rampant and take over everywhere, and the answers Orwell digs up are terrifying in their implications! Read this book, challenge your mind, awaken your senes to what is happening in the world around you now, and be changed forever. "1984" is absolutely one of the best books ever written!

A classic I think everyone should read. I really makes you think.

I recently reread this for the first time since 1984. It is still brilliantly scary.

I found this book more interesting than Animal farm since I love the correlation with world history in this novel, the whole conflict of fake communism and socialism.

Excellent Book, Orwell's best for sure.

Great book-Orwell really makes the world with Big Brother come alive

"Big Brother," an abstract fear, became a real household presence in the United States. This is the testament to the brilliance of 1984, even in 2009.

This book was an amazing example of what could possibly happen when the government has too much control in our lives. It was well written and very thought provoking.

Truly a must read.

There is only one thing to say about this book.

Still laboring through this classic, nothing wrong with the book, just not my style of reading, I prefer more true story type books!

My wife demanded that I read this, but I feel overall the story falls flat. In an esoteric way, it neither comes off as a warning of a future to avoid, or the futility of the fate of man.

This is a very interesting story line. I thought it was okay. It is definatly something to think about.

This version has an Afterword by Erich Fromm.

Classic!!
