The first in a series of books about an older woman Sylvia and a younger woman Sarah . It takes place in an old victorian home after Sylvia's sister dies. The author incredibly weaves a wonderful story involving quilting and the history of the time. It is a MUST read book but beware you wont want to PUT IT DOWN!!! For a synopsis and look at all the books in the series go to www.elmcreek.net.

Very good book. I got this book from PBS just to try something different. I found that it was the first of many in this series after I had the book in my hands. I am for sure going to find the rest of the books in this series.
The way that Sarah and Sylvia come to be more then just employer and employee. To see both of them grow and learn from each other and to see them become very good friends. To listen in on all the family history that Sylvia has to impart to explain why she is still mad at her sister in law and then to come to terms with her past and to again connect with her sister in law was really good.
I also liked the quilting references although I am not a quilter. I found myself reading instead of watching the TV or movies we had rented this was such a good book and so well written that I just did not want to put it down. Now I have to see if I can find the next book in the series so I can see what will happen next to this wonderful bunch of people.

This was a pleasant story... Not an extremely sophisticated story, but a nice read. It's a story about friendship between two unlikely characters. Some of the situations in the book were over-simplified, but if you can overlook that, you'll enjoy the story. I didn't realize that this book was the first in a series, until I completed the book. I will check out the rest of the series.

I became addicted to Jennifer Chiaverini's Elm Creek Quilts series. I ADORE them and can't put them down! A MUST read for anyone, not just quilters!

Such a pleasant read with all the details and description a quilter could hope for. This first in the series is sure to be a starter for the whole lot by Chiaverini.

When Sarah McClure and her husband Matt move to Waterford PA she hopes to make a fresh start in the small college town. Unable to find a job both practical and fulfilling, she take a temparary postion at Elm creek manor helping its reclusive owner Sylvia Compson prepare her family estate for sale after the death of her estranged sister. Slyvia is also a master quilter an as part of Sarahs compensation offers to share the secrets of her creative gifts.
DURing their lessons the intricate varied threads of Sylvias life began to emerge
I loved this book. I could not put it down.
