Book Description:
She could see right through him...

Zoe Smith was far from normal. Crazy as it sounded, on her twenty-fifth birthday she had the chance to become a superhero. But x-ray vision and the ability to fly were only two things to consider. There were other factors, too...

There was her newfound heightened sensitivity. She could hardly eat a chocolate bar without writhing in ecstasy; how was she to give herself the birthday gift she'd really set her heart on -- George Taylor? The handsome P.I.'s dark exterior hid a truly sweet center, and Zoe felt certain that his mere touch would send her spiraling into oblivion. But the man was looking for an average Jane -- no matter what he claimed.

He could never love a superhero-to-be, especially one with an overprotective stallion of a brother and a creepy cousin who seemed to be lurking in all the wrong places. Could he? Zoe had to know. With her super powers, Zoe could only see through his clothing -- to strip bare the workings of his heart, she'd have to rely on something a little more potent.

A silly, cute type book. Written in a sort of chick-lit style with a protagonist who is a children's librarian and half-superhero, and about to enter a role full time as a Protector. That is, if she doesn't fail her test or decline the job - both of which means she will become mortal and suffer a memory wipe. Losing her memory will mean forgeting her superhero relatives (her dad and big brother). Her powers are x-ray vision, super strength and super sensitivity (chocolate makes her practically explode), but her ability to move objects is almost non-existent. Meanwhile she has met a man she is interested in, but he is mortal and she is afraid of entering a relationship with him, and her cousin (who is being tested the same time as she is), is doing all he can to make her fail her superhero test. Several characters with interconnecting threads as the evildoers scheme and maneuver while the good-guys are mostly blissfully unaware and bumble along.

First book in a 4 book series regarding modern day superheros. They were all fun to read and best read in order. I hate reading a book and finding out that there were other books regarding the characters that were done prior: The order is: Aphrodite's Kiss, Aphrodite's Passion, Aphrodite's Secret and Aphrodite's Flame.

First book in the series about the Greek Gods and their descendants in the modern world. Entertaining and quirky, with a well thought-out world. A nice, fast read.

I love all of Julie Kenners superheroes books. This was the first in the series and an excellent introduction.(OK Cat's Fancy is slightly related.)

Zoe Smith's life has always been a bit odd, but now things are really getting out of hand. She’s about to turn 25, her super powers are not exactly under control and she has to decide whether to join the Council of Protectors or be turned into a mortal.

Also, she has met a handsome private investigator who she really wants to get to know better, but, since she is currently being tested by the Council, this isn’t the best time.

This is a truly interesting premise with a good romance and a bit of humor.

I reviewed this for All About Romance a few years back and thought it was "eh". It wasn't lively enough to hold my attention and I was offended that the heroine didn't make good use of her X-Ray vision powers. My fellow reviewer gave it an "A" so I picked this copy up for others to enjoy.

Romantic Times Review:
With her 25th birthday rapidly approaching, Zok Smith has some major issues to resolve. Like gaining control of her powers in time to join the Venerate Council of Protectors, aka Superheroes, or choosing to become completely mortal. All her life, Zok has dreamed of joining her father and her half brother in the Council of Protectors. Because her mother is mortal, Zok is a halfling and subject to certain rules.

George Bailey Taylor is a down on his luck ex-cop turned P.I. Taylor first runs into Zok while on a divorce case. Their attraction is immediate, but because of the circumstances, neither knows how to locate the other. As fate would have it, Taylors foster sister recently bought an old necklace whose stone just happens to be from the legendary Aphrodites girdle. Zoks cousin Mordichai has been instructed by his father, the outcast Heronymous, to get that stone for a ceremony designed to destroy the Protectors and enslave mortals. Zok has no idea that the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Author Julie Kenner has developed a wonderfully original storyline laden with fun. The whole concept of the Council of Protectors is marvelous. A true original, filled with humor, adventure and fun!
