Book Description:
Allegra's Dictionary of the Paranormal

Dark One n. [Origin: Czech, also known as vampires] A Moravian Dark One is doomed to spend his lifetime cruising the singles' scene in search of the one woman who can redeem his soul. You think dating is hard? Try it when you're nine hundred years old and you've used every pick-up line in the book. Forming a lasting relationship is even more difficult when the woman who makes your heart sing sees dead people and likes to play with demons.

Summoner n. [Origin English] Someone who summons ghosts, poltergeists, and demon lords. Summoners tend to hang around cities like London that are filled with portals to Hell, haunted inns, and other locations dishy vampires might be found lurking. Most Summoners are female, which makes for difficulties when it comes to explaining to the man who haunts your dreams and fills your soul with love why your pet ghosts can be found hovering around even the most romantic of circumstances.

Not bad, quick read..helps a little if you read her first one, "A Girl's Guide to Vampires"

If Allie doesn't find a ghost soon, her short career as a "Summoner" will be a thing of the past, so she is delighted to find what she thinks is the tortured spirit of a gorgeous, naked, wounded man. But the cranky spirit doesn't need her help since he isn't a ghost but the best-selling author of vampire romances and Moravian Dark One. Allie wants answers from Christian, but he is more interested in working out the exact nature of their relationship, since fate has chosen Allie as his "Beloved."

I decided to give this a shot- I generally like Katie MaCalister's work although I didn't think the first book in the Dark Ones series was one of her best. I am glad I gave it a second chance here! The second book has redeemed the series; I read it in 2 days and loved it. I recommend this although I think you would have to read the first book in order to understand some of the circumstances of the story.

Similarities of Christine Feehan's Dark Hunters. The DH here is named the "Dark One" and he also needs to find a woman to redeem his soul. The woman takes the form of a Summoner; someone who summons ghosts, poltergeists, and demon lords. Macalister's book is lighter than Feehan's DH books and there's less sex. Both authors are good reads depending what mood you're in. A quick and fun read, humorous, especially when the protagonist deals with the 5 ghosts in her keep.

This is an engaging and humorous romance. When the friends of Christian decide to help him find his Beloved, they go all out. She falls into her powers as a Summoner and into his arms at the same time. A good read.

Vampire love, with witty dialogue, but unrealistic character motivation. Summer read.

This book left me cold, and not in a cool, vampire-y way. The heroine seemed a few bricks shy of a load most times and then had brilliant (and impossible) insight at other times. I didn't see the purpose of her handicap; it seemed tossed in various locations at the last minute. I finished the book, but just felt annoyed by the end.

After reading both her Ashling Grey and Silver Dragons Novels, I find myself a little disappointed in this series since the others were more fluid and engaging. Though it does occur in the same "world" as those series which you find out in this book as it takes off into the vampires side of the story. This book was more well written than the previous one in the series and I hope to see even more improvement in #3 but alas it doesn't drive me to pre-order the next one like the Dragons series (whose next installment comes out in October!).

Like all Katie Macalister books, I found this one to be laugh out loud funny at parts. A 900 year old vampire gets hooked up with a woman with a bad past who refuses to be the Middle Ages doormat he's used to having around. Nice growth in the characters and page turning tension in the begining. Great summer read.
