Book Description:
With blowtorch and steel Clare Kimball has sculpted a personal vision that commands the attention of the New York art world. But success can not burn away the vague, troubling memories, the half-remembered nightmares that have plagued Clare since childhood. These phantoms of the past have drawn her home to Maryland, to the small town where she grew up and where her father died in circumstances never really explained.

Emmitsboro is just as Clare remembered - the same familiar faces, the same chatty gossip passed over the counter at the local diner. Nothing much has changed - except Cameron Rafferty. Once the high school bad boy, he landed on the right side of the law and is now the town sheriff. The only clue to his wild, passionate nature is the light in his eyes when he looks at Clare. In Cam's strong arms Clare is seduced into falling in love. And into believing her small-town world is safe.

But within the dark woods of Emmitsboro something evil spreads its poisonous power. Now the once-peaceful town is wrapped in a cloak of terror, hiding a teacherous heart. And now Clare must pay the price for digging up the secrets of the past. . . and confront an evil that may be unstoppable -- because those who practice it may be divine.

I read this one a couple of years ago and the ending still haunts me. Might be one of the best books I have ever read. I could not put it down.

What the outside of the book doesn't tell you is that the underlying plot of this story includes a theme about Satanism. The first time I encountered it I found it unnerving and a little disturbing. So if that theme would be too much for you then you should not read. BUT the story and storyline was well written and developed and a real page turner. I had a hard time putting it down.

This one should NOT be listed as a Romance - it should be listed as a Thriller!! There were times that I thought about not finishing it as it really was scary - but couldn't lay it down. Definitely a 'good read'!

Surprisingly good, but dark and intense. Quite interesting (and frightening)information about satanic cults that I had never heard.

A powerful tale of passion, murder and small-town scandal. In this classic novel, a woman returns to the home she left behind, to a past that is waiting to kill her. You won't want to lay this one down.

It's about an artist that goes back home to her haunted past and her father's suicide. I won't ruin it, but it's a great read!

Clare Kimball fled her small town and took the art world by storm. Now, she needs to go back and face the demons she tried to leave behind. Typical Roberts, full of suspense, colorful characters and romance.

I am in the middle of re-reading this book. The first time being the many years ago that I read it,when it first was released. I am enjoying it as much now as I did then. Earlier Nora Roberts is the best. So,yes.I highly recommend this read.

This one keeps you hopping. It has some devil worshipping in it by the bad guys of course but nothing offensive.

OK story line. I almost stopped reading it, but then stayed with it just to confirm who the members of the group were.
Not her best work, but tolerable.

A decade ago, sculptor Clare Kimball fled Emmitsboro, Maryland, to take the art world by storm. Now she is a celebrated artist of her generation. But no amount of success can eclipse the nighmares that haunt her - of the memories of her father's suicide. Just as her star is shining the brightest, she leaves it all behind to face her demons.
