Book Description:
To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court and the heart of a lovely Princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry.

Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

Magician: Apprentice and the 2nd book, Magician: Master comprise one of the best fantasy stories ever told. This is the first book in the Riftware Sag. It tells the story of Pug, an orphan boy who works in the kitchen of Castle Crydee and how he becomes aprenticed to Kulgan, the Dukes magical advisor. Then magicians from another world open a rift to Pug's world and a war that spans years ensues and eventually alters Pug's life forever.

Volume 1 in the Riftwar Saga. Two radically different cultures meet and must learn to co-exist.

Very interesting combination of SF & fantasy in a four book set. Very, very readable.

This is called the author's preferred edition; Mr. Feist actually added in some stuff that was cut from the original printing. Not that I could tell the difference, since I didn't read the book when it first came out.

All in all, not bad for a first book (epic fantasy).
