It's a bit difficult to categorize Hooper's books, but whatever you call the genre--paranormal romance, erotic mystery, or spooky thriller---Hooper does it extremely well!
From back cover:
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the deadliest one of all?
It's an antique mirror that can reveal secrets . . . or tarnish the truth.
And for struggling artist Laura Sutherland, buying it is only the first step into a dark maze of lies, manipulation--and murder.
It brings Peter Kilbourne into her life and makes her the prime suspect in his fatal stabbing. Determined to clear her name--and uncover Peter's reason for wanting the mirror back--Laura will breach the iron gates of the Kilbourne estate. There she will find that each family member has something to hide. Which one of them looks in the mirror and sees the reflection of a killer? And which one will choose Laura to be the next to die?
In Finding Laura, Laura Sutherland has a strange obsession about collecting mirrors. So one Saturday, she and her friend Cassidy go around to estate sales, one of them at the enormous Kilbourne family estate. Laura is instantly attracted to a mirror that is very old there, and buys it. Later in the day though, a strange thing happens. Peter Kilbourne comes up knocking at her apartment door wanting to buy this mirror back-at any price. But Laura refuses to give in to Peter. Then just hours later, he is murdered. The first suspect of course, is Laura.
From there Laura goes back to the grand house to convince Peter's family of her innocence so they can get the police off her back. But while there, she is strangely drawn in to the mansion, and Amelia, the old lady is taken with Laura, trying to learn all about her. She wants Laura to paint her portrait-and for what reason Laura cannot understand. She tries to convince the old woman that she is not really that kind of artist, but Amelia, powerful as she is, absolutely insists that she try it, and she'll pay her a hefty sum of course. She also offers Laura room and board there-and once Laura is attracted to Peter's older brother Daniel, she stays at the estate more and more.
But Daniel, just like Amelia is enigmatic, and Laura has trouble figuring out if he is to trust or not, and since he wasn't the favored child, if he had something to do with Peter's murder that night. But then there are a lot of other people that could be involved though in that house, and Laura grows more than a little frightened. Especially when another murder takes place shortly after Peter's death.
And Laura also traces the mirror to many lifetimes ago, and finds that it was handed down from many people with scandalous love affairs in the past. And she wonders why of course, did want to buy it back? The secret becomes uncovered slowly as you read the story. But hopefully Laura is not in danger of getting killed herself!

Creepy story line. Great for a plane or car ride.

Early Kay Hooper. Rambles a bit but, entertaining.
An older Hooper romantic suspense that is one of
my favorites. An antique mirror can indeed reveal secrets. And this title can be read again and again for its astonishing ending!
I love Kay Hooper novels and if you do too, you will love this one. If this is your first Kay Hooper book, you will be hooked. Great writing, great characters and a touch of suspense and mystery.
