Book Description:
The past isn't over....

An unspeakable act has ripped apart the idyllic town of Bakersville, Oregon, and its once-peaceful residents are demanding quick justice. But though a boy has confessed to the horrific crime, evidence shows he may not be guilty.

Officer Rainie Conner, leading her first homicide investigation, stands at the center of the controversy. It's hitting too close to home, bringing back her worst nightmares, threatening to expose her secret sins. But with the boy's life at stake, she won't let anything stop her from finding the real killer.

With the help of FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, Rainie comes closer to a deadly truth than she can imagine. Because out there in the shadows a man watches her and plots his next move. He knows her secrets. He kills for sport. He's already brought death to Bakersville and forever shattered the community. But what he has really come for is Rainie -- and he won't leave until he has destroyed her....

Really gripping, not a lot of romance which is good. I very much enjoyed the story line of twists and turns. Get this goodie

First book I've read by this author. Will definitely read more from Ms. Gardner.

Updated after reading the first four books.
This is book two of the ongoing Quincy-Rainie series. In order the books are:

"The Perfect Husband" intro of Pierce Quincy
"The Third Victim" intro of Rainie Conner
"The Next Accident" intro of Kimberly Quincy
"The Killing Hour" intro of Michael "Mac" McCormack
"Gone"
"Say Goodbye"

I have not read the last two books but the rest have all been great reads. I would suggest reading these books in proper order just to understand and appreciate the dynamics of each character and their interaction with each other. However, there is enough background info given in each book so that they don't necessarily need to be read in order.

Excellent thriller as always! This is the book where Quincey meets Rainie. Intriguing. Wish i had her spunk! The local community is shocked when there is shooting at their K-8 school.

Good and suspenseful. Hard to put down. At first, I was a little leary of a book fictionalizing school shootings, but it was really good.

Lisa Gardner is a fantastic author. She gets you hooked from page one to the end of the book. The characters are easy to relate to and the story is realistic. The Third Victim is part of her Rainie and Quincy series. Great Read!!

I ended up finishing this book in one sitting - I could not put the book down. The blurb only tells you the story line, not how well the author tells it.

"Small town secrets - an unspeakable act has ripped apart the town of Bakersville, Oregon, and its once peaceful residents are demanding quick justice. Though a boy has confessed to the crime, evidence shows he may not be guilty. Officer Rainie Conner, leading her first homicide investigation stands at the center of the controversy. This book is a page-turner from the get go. Lisa Gardner is my absolute favorite author. The book is suspensful and sad since it deals with school shootings and the aftermath. And it also touches on the feelings of parents whose child becomes a murderer.

When it comes to suspense this book fulfilled that requirement without a doubt. I could not put this book down until I knew the outcome.

The Third Victim is the second in the Quincy/Rainie series, and introduces small town cop Rainie Connor. A school shooting involving the sheriff's son disrupts Rainie's quiet Oregon town. FBI profiler Pierce Quincy has been researching school shootings, and he and Rainie determine that the case is not as cut and dry as it at first seems.

Unlike the first book in the series (The Perfect Husband), this book reads more like a mystery than a thriller. Though there is however plenty of suspense and action, much time is spent introducing Quincy and Rainie and telling their backstories. I found the ending somewhat disappointing in that it seemed like the connections between the primary school shooting story and Rainie's background were somewhat forced, but ultimately the characters are interesting enough to make this a worthwhile read. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.

This was really well written, a true page turner. The way that the main characters overcame such a great tragedy in order to see the truth was fantastic. Great read!
