As Dr. Jessica Popper embarks on a house call to a local horse farm, her one-eyed Dalmatian, Lou, and her tailless Westie, Max, stumble upon something unexpected: a corpse half buried in the woods. As Max happily digs up the dead canary planted near the body, Jessie realizes that this corpse was clearly about to sing. But about what? Or whom?Enlisting the aid of her on-again, off-again lover, PI Nick Burby, Jess applies the stubbornness of a bloodhound and the agile moves of a cat to identify a menagerie of suspectsÂ…including one who wants her off the case badly enough to kill again.

If you are a fan of cozies as well as an animal lover, you'll enjoy this first book in Cynthia Baxter's new Reigning Cats and Dogs mystery series. The heroine is a veterinarian who runs a mobile pet clinic and whose own dogs discover a murder victim when her van becomes stuck on the way to an appointment.

Jessica Popper, DVM, is marvelous with animals but not nearly so capable when it comes to dealing with people, especially members of the opposite sex. She is stubborn and pugnacious, while at the same time vulnerable - which keeps her from seeming too harsh.

This was a very enjoyable, light read, and I'll definitely pick up the next book in the series. C.A.H.

Cannot go wrong reading this mystery--love, dogs cats, birds, snakes and even a 'lizard' make up one great story.

This book is the first of a series featuring a veterinarian, Dr. Jessica Popper. That was part of the draw as I'm an animal lover. Dr. Popper is a good veterinarian, loves her patients, etc. and so should be a likeable protagonist. However, she is not very clever about people, so an unlikeable amateur detective. She has a very nice boyfriend that she loves, but doesn't want to admit it and who she treats very badly -- his major fault being that he loves her and wants to marry her. And she needs him, as a Watson figure, backup when she makes stupid mistakes in her amateurish investigation of the death of a sleazy public relations man.
So, the bottom line is that this is a chicklit cozy, and not a type of book I most enjoy. I won't be seeking out others in the series but know that some people enjoy this type of book and if you do, then you might like this one too.

I liked this book. I had just finished a heavy book and I needed a break. I, for the first time ever, figured out the "bad person" early into the book.

I'm not used to cozies being so long but it was a good book. There were many different curves thrown out and I started to suspect who the killer was by the end of the book. sometimes the main character, Jessie, is a bit annoying but not often

I'll definitely be continuing this series!

The heroine is a mobile vet and stubles upon a body. She also broke up with her PI lover 2 months earlier, and this is a convenient way to get in touch with him again. Not many surprising twists, but OK reading.

First in a series. Lady vet investigates a murder. I liked the dogs and the cat. Good cozy.

Quick little mystery about a vet, including her pets, and of course the love of her life - Nick! I am enjoying this series even tho I have read the first two out of order...but the third is in my TBR pile.

Purchased at the Sherman Oaks, Ca. Public Library's Book sale for the purpose of trading. I enjoy Cozy Mysteries a lot, so while this series is not my cup of tea, I look for Cozies to swap at book sales.
