This is an WWII memoir by Roald Dahl. Written for young adults, the writing is brilliantly clear. It starts as an expatriate memoir, recounting his experience as a Shell rep in what is now Tanzania in the mid-1930s. When the war started in 1939, he was assigned to round up hundreds of German nationals in Dar-es-Salaam. He was not trained at all for such a job and that lack of being taught continued when he became a pilot in the Royal Air Force. With nearly zero experience in combat flying he took part when seven RAF planes fought the Germans over Athens before the withdrawal from Greece. Incredible.
