Book Description:
The author's magnificent collage illustrations invite readers and viewers on a breathtaking underwater tour where brilliantly-colored sea creatures dazzle and delight the eye. His modern day fable is both wise and simple; based on the true habits of the Hermit Crab, it not only introduces young readers to the wonder and beauty of the marine environment but also contains an encouraging message for small children facing the inevitable challenges of growing up.

"Poor Hermit Crab! He's outgrown his snug little shell, so he finds himself a larger one--and many new friends to decorate and protect his new house. But what will happen when he outgrows this shell, and has to say good-bye to all the sea creatures who have made Hermit Crab's house a home? Children facing change in their own lives will relate to Hermit Crab's story--and learn a lot about the fascinating world of marine life along the way.

We had "won" a hermit crab and thought the girls would enjoy reading a book about them by this great author. Unfortunately this book is about Marine hermit crabs (didn't know there was such a thing until I Googled it), not land hermit crabs.

If you have pet hermit crabs and want a book about them, this is not it. This crab is working on his home and lives in the ocean.

A very cute kids' book that's more about friendship and helping others, than houses.

My duaghter enjoyed this book. As with all Eric Carle books, there is the lesson in the story, but many other lessons to be taught throughout the book. I don't think we've met an Eric Carle book we haven't liked yet!
