An 8-year-old boy named Moon Shadow leaves his home in China and sets sail for America where he is to be reunited with his father, who immigrated to the United States before Moon Shadow was born. Once in America, Moon Shadow helps his father, Windrider, fulfill a fabulous dream. This novel, set in the early 1900s, is based on a historical account of a Chinese immigrant in the United States who built a flying machine.
For all of his eight years, Moon Shadow has lived with his mother and grandmother in a small village in China. One day his simple, quiet life is turned upside down. Moon Shadow suddenly finds himself sailing to America to a new life in a strange new land with a man he has never met-his father!
A Newbery Honor Book.
"If it were only a fantastic story of high adventure, Dragonwings would be a success, but as an exquisitely written poem of praise to the courage and industry of the Chinese-American people, it is a triumph."--The New York Times
