Book Description:
On a summer morning in 1982, soldiers enter a Guatemalan village and massacre its women and children. Terrified of meeting a similar fate, returning relatives quickly bury their dead in makeshift graves. Today these families refer to their lost members as “the disappeared,” and human rights teams are trying to find them. Dr. Temperance Brennan, international forensic anthropologist, has been asked to investigate one of the most heart-breaking cases of her career.

As she digs in the cold, damp soil, clues emerge: a hair clip, a tiny sneaker, the hip bone of a child less than two years old. Something savage happened in the highlands two decades ago, and something savage is happening today. Four girls are missing from Guatemala City, and the victims may be linked.

An American human rights investigator is murdered as Tempe listens to her screams on the phone. Will Tempe be the next victim in a web of intrigue that spans decades?

Another excellent book by Kathy Reichs. This one she takes us to South Amercia initially to help identify bodies from a mass grave in a villiage. These are 'Disappeared' people. While there she ends up getting pulled into a murder investigation to identify a young woman. And of course this leads her back to Canada. The mysteries abound in this one and all appear to tangle together at one point or another.

This book is a fast and great read. I never imagined myself reading this type of book but I heard a lot of good reviews and now I know why. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves those CSI shows or loves murder mystery books.

Kathy Reichs is a #1 bestselling author, whose real-life career as a forensic anthropologist spawned the hit tv show "Bones."
Dr. Temperance Brennan, her acclaimed heroine, goes to Guatemala to aid in a harrowing excavation where she unearths a chilling history. She also unwittingly puts herself in danger during her investigation.
The violence of the past is linked to present events as Tempe travels between Canada and Guatemala to follow leads in the disappearances of 4 privileged young women.

In this installment Tempe is in Guatemala as part of a volunteer group working to locate and recover "the disappeared", the remains of those who vanished during the civil war from 1962 to 1999. While there she becomes enmeshed in the cases of four privileged young women who have vanished from Guatemala City.
This was a facinating read that more than met my expectations for a Kathy Reichs novel.

Back of book: They are "the disappeared" twenty-three massacre victims buried in a well in the Guatemalan village of Chupan Ya two decades ago. Leading a term of experts on a meticulous, heartbreaking dig. Tempe Brennan pieces together the violence of the past. But a fresh wave of terror begins when the horrific sounds of fatal attack on two colleagues come in on a blood-chilling satelite call. Teaming up with Special Crimes investigator Bartolome Galiano and Montreal detective Andrew Ryan, Tempe quickly becomes enmeshed in the cases of four privileged young women who have vanished from Guatemala City- and finds herself caught in deadly territory where power, money, and greed, and science converge.

I really liked this book. It has a lot of medical jargon in it so I skipped through that. It's really suspenseful and keeps you guessing.
