Book Description:
1996, Egypt. Searching for a treasure on the Nile, Dirk Pitt thwarts the attempted assassination of a beautiful U.N. scientist investigating a disease that is driving thousands of North Africans into madness, cannibalism, and death. The suspected cause of the raging epidemic is vast, unprecedented pollution that threatens to extinguish all life in the world's seas. Racing to save the world from environmental catastrophe, Pitt and his team, equipped with an extraordinary, state-of-the-art yacht, run a gauntlet between a billionaire industrialist and a bloodthirsty West African tyrant. In the scorching desert, Pitt finds a gold mine manned by slaves and uncovers the truth behind two enduring mysteries -- the fate of a Civil War ironclad and its secret connection with Lincoln's assassination, and the last flight of a long-lost female pilot....Now, amidst the blazing, shifting sands of the Sahara, DIRK PITT will make a desperate stand -- in a battle the world cannot afford to lose!

I read the book AFTER I watched the movie. I liked the movie, and I still like the movie, but the book is deffinitely better. The only down-side is the book can run a bit slow sometimes. Long discriptions about random events (like the president finally decides to act... it took an entire chapter to get that point across) but I still really liked the book.
Don't be scared to give it a try if you worry it will ruin the movie. You'll find it actually enhances it, and you will enjoy both just fine.

In 1996, in Egypt Dirk Pitt thwarts the attempted assination of a beautiful UN scientist who was investigating a disease that was driving thousands of North Africans into madness, death, and cannibalism. Pitt and his team in a state of the art yacht run a gauntlet between a billionaire industrialist and a bloodthirsty West African tyrant to prevent an environmental catastrophe. Add this to a long lost woman pilot from Australia and Abraham Lincoln on a buried Civil War ship and you have the makings of a great Dirk Pitt novel.

A very good book. From what I can tell, all of the Dirk Pitt books are much better than his newer series. Funny in parts, somewhat serious in others.
