Book Description:
Two brothers, Kevin and James Bannon, find themselves aligned on opposite sides during the Civil War, placed so deliberately by their father, a prosperous New Jersey businessman, so that he would be on the winning side regardless of the outcome. The young men's prewar training and their battlefield experiences are absorbingly detailed. Each falls in love with a young woman who further cements their political persuasion, as it were. Predictably, they eventually meet on the battlefield--at Gettysburg. In an interesting historical note, Coyle separates fact from fiction by differentiating between the people and events he drew from Civil War history and the people and events that sprang from his imagination. An intriguing work of historical fiction. -- Booklist

A very good read although it did slow a bit when Coyle was explaining the different character plots and nuances of these characters which is understandable. The book seemed as if it transported you back to the civil war through these two brothers. While all the while I was sitting on the edge of my chair hoping neither would be killed!

From the cover...Haunted by the terrible secret of their youth, James and Kevin Bannon, sons of a prosperous New Jersey businessman, are bound by blood but divided by war. James marches with the hastily formed Company J, 4th Virginia Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Lexington Defenders." Kevin enters the struggle as a lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment, New Jersey militia-two reluctant warriors on opposite sides of a violent abyss. Drawing solace from the women they love, the brothers are swept up in a bloody whirlwind, hurling toward on of the most unforgettable climaxes in contemporary fiction.
