Poor Daimbert thought Royal Wizard of a tiny rustic kingdom would be a nice easygoing first post. Between catching up on what he missed in wizard school (including discovering what went wrong with the embarrassing frog incident at his transformation practical), figuring out from scratch how to install magical telephones (since he'd managed to avoid entirely the series of lectures about them) and trying to befriend the only other young man at court, the serious Royal Chaplain, Daimbert had plenty to occupy himself with.
Unfortunately, evil lurks in the pleasant little castle of Yurt: the king is dying of a malign spell, and it seems someone is practicing black magic. Now the young wizard who barely qualified for his new diploma is expected to unravel a magical mystery and stop the overwhelming malignant person or force before it claims the lives and souls of those he's newly sworn to protect. Evil's gonna regret messing with Daimbert's kingdom, because he's got magic, and he knows how to useĀ-well, he knows how to improvise!
I've discovered I'm not a big a fan of silly and goofy fantasy books as I thought I would be. I think Brittain has wonderful talent, but its simply not my cup of tea. His style reminds me a lot of Robert Asprin. :)
