Marvin and Stuart get to sleep over at Nick Tuffles house for Nicks birthday. They set out sleeping bags in the Tuffles backyard. Stuart and Nick fall right to sleep, but Marvin tosses and turns. Then he hears a noise, and something glowing zooms over his head. Is it really a flying birthday cake? Or something else? The next day, a very strange new kid shows up at school. . . .

You bet its a flying birthday cake - would Louis Sachar have it any other way? The same off-beat humor and understanding of children in this book as in all of Sachar's books. Capable 1st grade readers, 2nd and 3rd grades (and everybody else) will enjoy this book - which by the way has some very good social lessons.
