Book Description:
"Let her prove herself worthy as a man."

Newly knighted, Alanna of Trebond seeks adventure in the vast desert of Tortall. Captured by fierce desert dwellers, she is forced to prove herself in a duel to the death -- either she will be killed or she will be inducted into the tribe. Although she triumphs, dire challenges lie ahead. As her mythic fate would have it, Alanna soon becomes the tribe's first female shaman -- despite the desert dwellers' grave fear of the foreign woman warrior. Alanna must fight to change the ancient tribal customs of the desert tribes -- for their sake and for the sake of all Tortall.

Alanna's journey continues...

I have really been enjoying this series as it’s a quick read but full of imagination. Even though the author isn’t as descriptive as some are for individual scenes, her concisiveness makes for a fast-paced read that still leaves you eager to find out what will happen next, but not leave you in angst over it for several hundred pages.

Not my favorite book in this series. I abhor fanatical desert people and any story that includes them. The way they treat their women is hateful. Had I know this book revolved around this topic, I may have passed it up third book in the series or not....

That said, for the most part I did enjoy this book. Though the desert people and the time Alanna spent with them (which was 3/4 of the book) was beyond boring and aggravating. I enjoyed her time with George and most of her time with Jonathan. I'm not sure I like the ending but with book 4 still left of this series, there is time for Jonathan to make amends
