Hunky homicide detective Duncan Hatcher needs to figure out whether beautiful Elisa Laird is an innocent victim of a criminal plot or an alluring murderess. She's killed an "intruder" with a single precise gunshot, but she claims the man was sent to kill her by her husband, a corrupt Savannah judge. Hatcher's job is complicated by his simmering attraction to Elisa, and when she suddenly disappears, leaving behind another corpse, Hatcher has to get to the bottom of an insidious web of lies and murder. Sandra Brown blends sizzling romance and corkscrew plotting in this delicious Southern mystery.

When Detective Sergeant Duncan Hatcher is summoned to the home of Judge Cato Laird in the middle of the night to investigate a fatal shooting, he knows that discretion and kid-glove treatment are the keys to staying in the judge's good graces and keeping his job. At first glance, the case appears open and shut: Elise, the judge's trophy wife, interrupted a burglary in progress and killed the intruder in self defence. But Duncan is immediately suspicious of Elise's innocent act. His gut feeling is that her account of the shooting is only partially true--and it's the parts she's leaving out that bothers him.
Very good book...hard to put down.

Excellent book--riveting right to the end. So many twists and turns it is difficult to "figure it out" ahead of time.
