Book Description:

It all started with the social studies teacher's extra-credit assignment: come up with a plan to change the world for the better, and do it. Twelve-year-old Trevor McKinney began by doing something good for three people. But instead of paying him back, he asked them to "pay it forward" by doing a favor for three more people, who in turn would help three others, and so on, each act a link in a chain of human kindness.

And no one -- not his teacher, his mom, or anyone in his small California town -- could ever have dreamed of how far Trevor's plan would go.

I saw this movie years ago, probably right about when everyone else saw it. I think I may have liked the movie better. Of course, it had Kevin Spacey in it. I love him...

Anyway, back to the book... I got lost several times in it and had to figure out who was who. Too many characters with too many things going on.

Having said that, it was very touching and it makes me want to go out and do random things for people. The big question is... will I?

... and therein lies the problem.

:)

While different in many ways from the movie, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Very interesting, realistic characters.

Three imperfect people, one perfect idea, movie tie in book..Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, started out as a school teacher's extra-credit project...

If you've seen the movie, you really need to read the book, it is way better.

Subtle differences from the movie make this book a better story than the film.

I loved this book! I quite litterally couldn't put it down and had to finish it in one night. The interweaving of characters was fascinating to read. Having not seen the movie that was based on it I can't say which was better, though just by looking at the casting choices I know that they made a lot of changes. Anyway...

I loved the premise: what if everyone did a favor for three people and, instead of asking for payback, asked the person to "pay it forward" and instead help three other people. If we all did favors and told people to pay it forward, eventually the whole world would be so caught up in trying to remember how many favors they owed to other people that there wouldn't be time for gang violence and wars and all that other stuff. It would be a perfect world.

If everyone believed and implemented what this little boy had in mind, the world would be a better place. It's quite inspiring.

Pretty good read, but as always the book & the movie are never quite the same ~ the 1 that came out first is always better (at least in my opinion).

It is all a good book can do by way of entertaining story and good morality behind it.

A friend of mine spoiled the ending and so I didn't read the book. It has a very good premise--do random acts of kindness for other people and don't expect paybacks. As them to pay it forward, to do more random acts for others.

Surprising read: quick and light, but with definite deeper meaning and ideas. Fairly true to the movie (the book came first), but better, of course.

I loved this book. So much better then then the movie. The movie did not do it justice and cut a lot out.
