When Christy Petrino discovers that her fiance, Michael DePalma, and the law firm where she works are linked to the mob, she breaks her engagement and quits her job. But no one walks away from the DePalma family so easily. Christy's freedom comes on one condition: She must deliver a locked briefcase to a motel on North Carolina's Ocracoke Island. Her late-night drop-off is only the beginning of a tide of terror: In the shadows of the Outer Banks, Christy senses she is being followed... and suddenly she is a witness in a police investigation of a serial killer known as the "Beachcomber" -- who targets young women who all resemble her. Handsome surfer Luke Rand offers the best kind of shelter in his strong arms. But as their sensual attraction flares, Christy hears warning bells telling her if you want to survive a hot and deadly summer, trust no one....

I wish I could give this book negative stars because that's what it deserves. I don't even know where to begin. The book opens with Christy being followed by a serial killer. As she's running to her cabin, she comes across a wounded girl on the beach. When she stops the guy gets closer, so she takes off to get "help". She arrives back at her cabin and spends the next 15 pages hanging out casually waiting for the police. She chats with her neighbors and a family member who happens to live nearby. In no way does she even consider going back to check on the girl. When the police finally arrive she nonchalantly shows them where the girl is. Even if I thought I were in danger, I would have made some sort of effort to help a wounded person. Christy is the most selfish character I have ever read. There are several other instances where she demonstrates this, but I will spare you. The book abruptly ends with a unrealistic twist. I wish I could get the time back I wasted reading this piece of crap.

Very good book - the ending I thought was a little unrealistic but overall a great read.

My first Robards book and I enjoyed it. It's a heavier mystery than I've been reading (not a cozy) and I really enjoyed it too.

Excellent! The story moves along with a good pace; full of suspense, but fun, too.
