Under cover of night in Richmond, Virginia, a human monster strikes, leaving a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralyzed the city. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta suspects the worst: a deliberate campaign by a brilliant serial killer whose signature offers precious few clues. With an unerring eye, she calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman. But this investigation will test Kay like no other, because it's being sabotaged from within and someone wants her dead.

This is the first book in the the Kay Scarpetta series. I inadvertently read the second book first, but am glad I did. If I had read this one first, I probably would not have continued with the series. The books get tremendously better after this one.
The first Kay Scarpetta draws you into a world that is definitely NOT cozy, but is so very realistic you can almost smell the institutional paint mixed with disinfectant and blood. There is no gore for the sake of sensationalism however--the story is very tightly constructed.
I look forward to more and will read them in order to watch how the main characters continue their interactions.

as the beginning of the series, it pulls you right in. this is must read for thrill seekers. kay must stop a killer before she becomes his next victim. she must turn to people she never thought she would have to confide in. a real page turner, keeps you waiting for the next one.

1st in the Kay Scarpetta series and a definite must read for any mystery/thriller reader. Is a wonderful and interesting story of a serial killer and the people that try to stop him. The characters are easy to care for and it leaves you guessing right till the very end. I will definitely be reading more of this series!
