Beloved bestselling inspirational author Lewis kicks off The Courtship of Nellie Fisher series, dishing up her usual sort of Amish meal. Amish teen Nellie Fisher's grief over the death of her sister, Suzy, in a drowning accident is just beginning to heal. It helps that Caleb Yoder has asked her to be his girl, and wedding bells ring in her imagination. Her baked goods shop also provides solace. But change blows through her Pennsylvania Amish community, threatening to divide families and thwart her newfound romance. Other storylines are set up: Rosanna King seems unable to have children, but is promised a forthcoming baby by a woman who has many; Nellie's father reads forbidden scripture and becomes intrigued with salvation by grace. Amish dialect is used judiciously throughout, and although some items (like an old journal) seem like tired cliches, Lewis creates the tension necessary to get the series started. Some Christian readers will wonder about a theology that finds Suzy's death and a crop failure part of God's plan, and there may be confusion for readers unfamiliar with the Amish about the boundaries of Rumschpringe (rumspringa, or the running-around period for some Amish teens). Lewis has a gentle narrative style, however, and her fans will line up for this latest fictional slice of Amish life.

Beverly Lewis is an author who never disappoints. She always has a unique story line - not just your standard love story -- this book has several interwoven plots and well-developed characters. I always learn something new about the Amish culture from her books. Can't wait for the next book in this series.

If you haven't read this one from Beverly Lewis you are missing out. Once I got started on this one I could not put it down! There is always a secret involved that makes you wonder what will happen next. Her characters always have a major decision to make in their lives. Highly recommended!

I absolutly LOVED this book. I picked it up for something to occupy my time on a plane ride home but I never anticipated to get hooked. Now I HAVE to read the second book. READER BEWARE: Extremely addictive!

I truly enjoyed reading this book. Beverly Lewis has done an excellent job creating a romance between a couple that love God first & then each other. While creating a backdrop for their courtship, she explains rituals & rules. I finished this book with an incredible desire to read the next books to follow.

This is a sweet, gentle story with believable characters and an interesting plot. Although it's classified as religious fiction, and does certainly have a strong Christian theme, I didn't feel like the author was creating a story with the sole purpose of shoving religion down my throat. Books 2 and 3 weren't available on PBS so, within a couple of hours of finishing it, I had purchased them on Amazon. That's saying a lot about how good the story is, as I am a cheapskate and seldom purchase books that aren't on clearance.

Beverly Lewis steps back in time as she describes a character who is seeing changes within the Old Order Amish community she is part of. The story takes place in 1966. A very quick read. This is the first book of three in "The Courtship of Nellie Fisher" series. If you enjoy reading about Amish fiction, you won't want to miss this book. Beverly Lewis does not disappoint.

I like this book a loot but was a little disappointed in the end but have just started the next in the series so maybe it will answer the questions that I felt I was left with. The whole series has been very different from her other books.
