Book Description:
National best seller and Today show Book Club selection, Broken for You is the story of two women in self-imposed exile whose lives are transformed when their paths intersect. Stephanie Kallos's debut novel is a work of infinite charm, wit and heart. It is also a glorious homage to the beauty of broken things. When we meet septuagenarian Margaret Hughes, she is living alone in a mansion in Seattle with only a massive collection of valuable antiques for company. Enter Wanda Schultz, a young woman with a broken heart who has come west to search for her wayward boyfriend. Both women are guarding dark secrets and have spent many years building up protective armor against the outside world. As their tentative friendship evolves, the armor begins to fall away and Margaret opens her house to the younger woman. This launches a series of unanticipated events, leading Margaret to discover a way to redeem her cursed past, and Wanda to learn the true purpose of her cross-country journey. Both funny and heartbreaking, Broken for You is a testament to the saving graces of surrogate families and shows how far the tiniest repair jobs can go in righting the world's wrongs.

A decent read, but not that great of a book. It starts out well, then goes kind of weird for me. I get that an incident of that type would change your world- but I am not sure it works in a book like this. And it all gets put together just way too neat in the end. It felt like the author had a great idea for a story, but didn't know how to tell it right.

This was a wonderful novel with complicated characters and an unusal story. It also had a lovely ending that didn't feel contrived or hokey. Loved it.

Loved this book and way the author thinks. This one had me literally from page one, which rarely happens for me. Basically, broken people from different walks of life come under one roof to find they can still put the pieces back together, especially when they have a shoulder to cry on. Great book!

I stumbled across this one in one of my sister's giveaway piles. What a find! A story of heartbreak transformed, devastation and loss that leads to rebirth and immeasurable gifts.I found the characters believable and utterly lovable. I didn't want it to end!

Wonderful story although a little frustrating at the end. You think here comes the happy ending and then there's another twist to the story. All straightens out in the end though for a very satisfying read.

A story about an older woman and a young woman whose lives have been damaged...meeting and forming a special bond. Learning how to open up their hearts. A tender story.

This book started out so well and then went in all different directions.
an older woman(Margaret) living alone in her mansion filled with many valuable antiques meets up with a young woman (Wanda) who becomes a border in her home.
both women have endured self imposed exile; after they meet and become unlikely friends.
this is an eccentric book. funny and sad;heartbreaking family situations. but the enduring theme, the saving grace of surrogate families, surmounts even the diffucult subjects brought up.
