Book Description:
When Countess Zorah Rostova asks London barrister Sir Oliver Rathbone to defend her against a charge of slander, he is astonished to find himself accepting. For, without a shred of evidence, the countess insists that the prince of her small German principality was murdered by his wife, the woman who was responsible for his exile twenty years before.

Though private investigator William Monk and his friend Hester Latterly, manage to establish that the prince was indeed murdered, as events unfold the likeliest suspect seems to be Countess Zorah herself.

In the two series that Anne Perry authored, William Monk and Thomas Pitt, she builds the characters and their lives as she delves into their latest mystery which enhances her stories with an added dimension. If you wish to get the most out of her series, here are the Monk books in the order in which they were written: 1990-Face of a Stranger, 1992-A Dangerous Morning, 1994-A Sudden Fearful Death, 1995-The Sins of the Wolf, 1996-Cain His Brother, 1997-Weighed in the Balance, 1998 The Silent Cry, 1998-A Breach of Promise, 2000-The Twisted Root, 2000-Slaves of Obsession, 2001-Funeral in Blue, 2002-Defend & Betray, 2003-Shifting Tide. For historical (Victorian Age) fiction mystery lovers, she is the greatest for a delightful pageturner.

A William Monk/Hester Latterly mystery. Very good.

Perry's series about Victorian-age investigator William Monk is one of the crown jewels of the genre, and her latest keeps the standards high. Called to the small German principality of Felzburg, Monk finds himself involved in aristocratic murder, slander and politics. Two eras are ending -- English innocence and the independence of little states like Felzburg -- and as Monk and his associates work on this case, their efforts are shadowed by clouds of coming conflicts.

WARNING - Read the Monk books in order! The characters develop as the series continues and this is probably the 6th book in the series. Start with "The Face of a Stranger"
