Book Description:
Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny, four orphaned brothers and sisters, suddenly appear in a small town. No one knows who these young wanderers are or where they have come from. Frightened to live with a grandfather they have never met, the children make a home for themselves in an abandoned red boxcar they discover in the woods. Henry, the oldest, goes to town to earn money and buy food and supplies. an old-fashioned tale of four orphans who set out to make it on their own. Reading level 3, and a great read aloud for 6 and 7 year olds.

One warm night four children stood in front of a bakery. No one knew them. No one knew where they came from.
Four orphan children set out to find a safe place to live and discover an old red boxcar that shelters them from a storm.
This is the first book in a wonderful series of books fromt the boxcar children!

This is the first book in the series. A story about orphans determined to make it on their own. Very good story for children of all ages.

Delightful and wonderful. I am a teacher and read it to my kids in class and they LOVED it and want me to find the rest of the set and continue the stories.
